Set and Forget Humidifier Systems
Ever wonder where the original "Set and Forget" Humidification system came from? Us! There are so many companies now naming their products "set and forget" that it is hard to distinguish where this actually came from.
Well here is a little history. Our company Habitat Monitor was founded in the 90's by the President and engineer of all of our systems, David de Sieyes in his basement. He perfected the Habitat Monitor and developed a small fleet of humidifiers to go along with them. It was the first hygrometer that allowed you to set the RH and temp and maintained that setting with the precision of a minimal 1-2% fluctuation. Cigar and Wine Temp-Cheap VS. Precise
I have been scouring the Internet looking to see if people consider cigar and wine to be a hobby and collection as opposed to an investment that they expect to gain on in the years to come. Turns out MOST are considering the value in their "collection" and therefor that is why they continue to invest in this hobby.
Apparently it is all that wrapped into one. So then, why do these people continue purchase cheap and inexpensive, made in China crap to pass for a humidification system? I have compared many hygrometers and all of which allow a fluctuation in RH of +/- up to 15%?!? How reliable is this in your humidor or wine cellar? The ideal way to keep the condition and value of your "investment" is the ability to keep the RH within a 1-2% fluctuation. Think about the expansion of your corks or cigar wrappers. They need room to expand with pressure and weather but if they expand too much they will be withered and the corks will dry out.....not ideal.
What if you are a restaurateur and your pull is Wine Offerings? You MUST produce a quality wine that is kept in precise conditions if you want $100 per bottle or more. I recently went to Las Vegas for the IPCPR trade show in July. We went to this wonderful little French Bistro and ordered what was supposed to be a fabulous bottle of Bordeaux worth $180. Well when we got it our waiter apologized for the temperature and condition of the wine but still poured it for us. Cork in the wine floating, and the temp of the wine was probably 40 degrees....too cold for red! I asked what they had for a system and he said a cooler that was supposed to keep it at 58 degrees and nothing else.
Well if there had been a humidifier in there with that cooler controlled by our Habitat Monitor there have been no problem to keep that wine at 58 and the humidity at 45% so that the temp did not dip so low and the cork would not have dried out. People, if your temp is too cold the humidity is drawn out of the air. You NEED humidity to balance out the atmosphere, it is a fact.
The Habitat Monitor can shut off the cooler and turn on the humidifier simultaneously so your environment is perfectly balanced, trust me. Do not have someone return a $180 bottle of wine or a $100 cigar!

Whole House Humidification-Fall/Winter
Fall is here!
There is something fantastic about fall and what it means. For myself, I have children in school so it is the beginning of a "new year" for us. New clothes, new books etc and lots of excitement. Also the start of our sports season, which in my house is insane. Football, soccer, riding, cross country plus add in homework and trying to get everyone fed for dinner and you have a royal mess!
Another thing in my house in fall is the dry weather. Our hands and lips start to crack and crust, attractive! My wood floors creak even more, and it seems as though my forced hot air is choking me with the sandpaper feel of breathing. Musical instruments, wine and cigars do all need the proper amount of humidity to perform and produce great results, but what people overlook is the need for us humans to have the proper RH level. When the human body is inadequate we loose valuable fluids, oils in the skin, allergens can creep in, cold germs are easier to travel through the dry air etc....Lists go on and on.

a little feedback for you. We hooked up our system and it looks like it works
great. It took our room from 28% RH up to 45% with no problem at all. I wanted a
dehumidifier with a pump so I went with a Friedrich 50 pint with built-in drain
pump. I have it hooked up to the humidistat switch and it seems to cycle on and
off with the signal from the humidistat without losing its settings. So it looks
like we have a complete system that we can set up and not have to worry
about.

All hail Habitat Monitor
After 10 years my Habitat Monitor controller
started to hiccup. Occasionally it failed to trip the relay and shut off the
Duracraft humidifier. No big deal.
A new one would cost hundreds (and be well worth the money) but even after 10 years the folks at CMT took care of me. For a reasonable fee they rebuilt the device - new humidity sensors, firmware and relay - and sent it back. And they did it all quickly and with no drama. I'm a customer for life. Thanks, David.  | |
