Is Your Artwork Protected?

Temperature & Humidity Control of Artwork & Papers

No particular humidity and temperature ranges are ideal for all artwork, however, in general, lower temperatures greatly increase their life span. Museum visitors however, usually prefer to be warm!
Studies have proven that lowering the relative humidity and temperature will greatly increase the longevity of plastics and other organic materials. Additionally, relative humidity should not have rapid fluctuations. For collections of mixed objects, a consistent humidity between 25% and 65% is recommended. Many museums set their gallery temperatures between 65 and 68 F and humidity at 45%.
Relative Humidity
Inconsistent humidity stresses most materials. Rapid changes in humidity will damage more materials than temperature changes will. Humidity changes can cause warping, cracking, and delamination. Slow seasonal changes are less problematic than sudden dramatic alterations. Humidity above 65% can cause mold growth and metal corrosion; humidity below 25% can make leather and paper brittle and more susceptible to damage.
Try to achieve these humidity levels through humidity control of your room or entire house or building. Please contact us and we’ll help design a humidity control system to protect your valuables.

SIGNS YOUR GUITAR NEEDS A HUMIDIFIER

- Washboard texture on top
- Lower action due to a flattened (dropping) top
- Sharp fret ends
- Diminished top or back arch

If your acoustic guitar has a rough, corduroy-like appearance, it is drying out. Get a humidifier for your guitar as soon as possible to avoid cracking. Another issue for dry guitars is the arch flattening. This is one of several signs that you need a humidifier for your guitar.
Dried out guitars can also split along their sides or seam lines. If your guitars show any of the following signs, consider a guitar humidifier:

Guns & Artillery

How to Maintain Proper Humidity Levels for Guns, Rifles & Other Artillery & Firearms

Excess moisture causes metals to corrode. Steel and iron, especially those having a bright polish, are very susceptible to rust. A simple way to help preserve your guns is to store them in a relatively dry environment, but not so dry that the wood dries out. Ideal humidity for guns and rifles is between 45% and 50%.
Proper care for your guns, artillery and firearms includes oiling, which is best done according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Always take care not to get oil on the grips or stock.
Please contact us so we can help design a climate control system to maintain the proper humidity levels and temperature for your guns, artillery and firearms.

Violins & String Instruments

Maintaining Proper Humidity Levels for Your Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Harpsichord or Other String Instrument

A wooden musical instrument’s humidity level depends on the humidity in the surrounding air. Wood expands and contracts as it takes in and gives off humidity from the air. This can cause changes in the shape and size of the instrument, which can be both stressful and potentially damaging.
Maintaining Proper Humidity Levels for Violins & Violas Can Prevent Warping, Cracking, Splitting and Joint Damage
What Can Excess Dryness Do To My String Instrument?
When an violin or viola contracts, parts of it, such as the top, are under tension. This creates the ideal conditions to cause cracks and separated seams and joints. If the violin or viola expands, this can also cause the joints to separate.
What Can Excess Humidity Do To My Instrument?
Excess moisture can cause bowing of your violin top and irreparable sagging in the violin’s neck. Excess moisture also changes the weight and sound of acoustic string instruments. When the moisture level is high, the wood is more easily bent. Heat and moisture were, in fact, what allowed the maker of your string instrument to bend its ribs.
It is so important to maintain proper humidity for your violin, viola, cello or bass. For example, a guitar top will change in width about 1/8 inch with a 20% change in humidity. The change in dimension would be even greater on a larger such as a cello or bass.
Ideally, your humidity should be constant. There certainly should never be a variation greater than 15- 20%.
Our highly accurate Habitat Monitor ® humidification systems can maintain your humidity level within a range of only 2%. The Habitat Monitor ® is a highly precise hygrometer which maintains its accuracy over a long period of time.
Contact us and we’ll help design a humidity control system to protect your violins, violas, cellos, basses and other string instrument.

Proper Cigar Storage & Humidors

Proper Cigar Humidity and Temperature

The recommended humidity level for cigars varies from 65 – 72%. The Habitat Monitor ® Cigar Humidifier Systems can be pre-programmed by us or easily re-set by you to whatever cigar humidity level you desire. The system’s cigar humidor hygrometer will continually measure and display your humidor humidity level and will automatically turn on your cigar humidor humidifier when necessary to maintain the cigar humidity level to within 2% of the set humidity level. The humidor hygrometer will also measure and display the cigar temperature and maintain it to with one degree Fahrenheit of the usual recommended (preset) temperature of about 70°, or whatever temperature you set.
Cigar humidor temperatures in excess of 70°F for extended periods of time are damaging to cigars. Elevated temperatures can result in the incubation of tobacco beetle larvae.
Thermo-electric air conditioners are available for cooling cigar cabinets. For large spaces such as cigar stores, the Habitat Monitor ® can control a variety of thru-wall or portable air conditioners to maintain temperature ±1 degree from the desired level.

Make Your Own Cigar Humidor

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What size humidifier do I need?
A: Measure the dimensions of your room or enclosure. Multiply the height x width x depth. Select the humidifier that covers the cubic volume of your enclosure. Volume estimates should be increased for installations in very arid climates (e.g. deserts, high mountains, etc.) to allow for the drying effects of forced air heat or air-conditioning. In addition, the physical construction of the space, including vapor barriers as well as sealed doors and windows, should be considered in sizing the proper humidifier.
What is the difference between an evaporative humidifier, an atomizing humidifier and an ultrasonic humidifier?
An evaporative or wick humidifier, has a wick which absorbs water from a reservoir and spreads it throughout its large surface area. A fan blows air into the wick to carry the humidified air out into the room, allowing drier air to enter and evaporate more moisture from the wick. The drier the air, the more rapidly the water will evaporate.
In an atomizing humidifier, a rotating disc throws water at a diffuser, which breaks the water into fine droplets that float into the air. Because they produce droplets they need to be mounted high up and have large open areas to disperse into for effective evaporation.
An ultrasonic humidifier contains a metal diaphragm vibrating at an ultrasonic frequency which creates extremely fine water droplets that silently exit the humidifier in the form of a cool fog.
In both atomizing (impeller) and ultrasonic humidifiers any suspended material in the water such as microorganisms and minerals will be transferred along with the water into the air. It is therefore recommended that distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water be used in these humidifiers. These humidifiers should also be cleaned regularly.

Have Reptiles?????

Maintaining Proper Heat and Humidity for Reptiles

Humidity in a reptiles enclosure is important at all times. Maintaining the proper humidity level is especially important when the reptile is shedding its skin.
Maintaining the correct level of humidity in your terrarium, vivarium or other reptiles enclosure can be achieved with a Habitat Monitor ® Humidification System.
Maintaining Proper Humidity Levels In a Vivarium or Terrarium
Snakes and large lizards also require proper humidity levels. The Habitat Monitor ® is an ideal way to maintain proper humidity levels for any snake, lizard or other reptile.
The health of your reptile will depend on the correct level of humidity, heating and lighting.
Reptile heaters should be compact and weather proof and be able to provide a variable climate for a reptile habitat.
Tropical humidity and reptiles
Reptiles that are part of the natural ecology in humid and tropical zones have adapted to their climate in a variety of ways. Introduced reptiles kept in tropical zones that are not exposed slowly to high humidity levels can suffer from humidity stress. Tropical areas are often humid because the upper level of clouds are saturated with humidity or water vapor and this can create rain.
Regardless of what humidification system you use and how you humidify a reptiles area, a variable climate and different levels of humidity can be the best solution for your reptiles habitat. This will allow your reptile to find an area of the terrarium or vivarium that suits it.
